Erdő Péter nyilatkozata Mindszenty József halálának 30. évfordulóján
2005. április 30. szombat 12:15

(Elhangzott az Esztergomi Bazilikában 2005. április 30-án, a Mindszenty bíboros halálának 30.

Olyan lelki kincs, amelyből a jövőben is meríthetünk. Hálát adunk értük a Gondviselő Istennek.
Örökségüket megilletődött lelkülettel magunkénak valljuk. Fájdalommal emlékezünk arra, hogy voltak olyan keresztények, sőt egyes egyházi vezetők is, akik a körülmények nyomása alatt nyilvánosan elhatárolódtak üldözött testvéreinktől, és elfogadták az ellenük gyakran felhozott koncepciós vádakat. A múlt sebeinek begyógyítását és Isten irgalmát kérjük egész magyar katolikus közösségünk számára.
Ezzel a lelkülettel imádkozunk azért, hogy Isten szolgáját, Mindszenty József bíborost mielőbb a boldogok sorában tisztelhessük.

A STATEMENT

(This statement was read publicly at the beginning of a memorial Mass, presented on 30th anniversary of the death of His Eminence, Cardinal Mindszenty, in the basilica of Esztergom, on April 30, 2005.)

It has been thirty years since our cardinal predecessor, Joseph Mindszenty gave his spirit back to his Creator. In this historical occasion we have the opportunity to reflect back on the examples of martyrs and confessors of the past sixty years.  How many bishops, priests, religious and lay member suffered persecution, humiliation, physical and spiritual torture, imprisonment, in fact even faced death for the sake of the Faith and fidelity to Christ’s teaching and the Church during Nazism, and the long period of Communism!
We look upon their witness with reverence and respect. Their sacrifice and steadfastness are sources of strength for the Catholic community of the faithful. This source is such a spiritual treasure that even in the future we can draw from it. We give thanks to God and His Divine Providence for them.
We claim and make this heritage our own with a spirit of awe. We recall and remember with pain that there were Christians, in fact certain Church leaders who, due to oppressive circumstances and pressures publicly turned away from their persecuted brethren and accepted false accusations and charges that were leveled against them. We ask God for the grace of healing the wounds of the past, and beseech His mercy on the behalf of the Hungarian Catholic community.
It is in this spirit that we pray that soon we would be able to honor God’s faithful servant, His Eminence, Joseph Mindszenty among the rank of the blessed.

 Esztergom, April 30, 2005.

+Peter Erdő,
Cardinal, primate, archbishop
